Town Theatre in 1890

The first permanent theatre in Mariánské Lázně was built on the site of the present Colonnade. The first play was performed by travelling actors on 14th June 1820.

The present theatre was built between 1865 and 1868 and designed and built by the local builder F. Zickler. This new renaissance building covered an area 38 x 19.6m. In that time this building was equipped with all the modern requirements of the day. In 1889, the stage and auditorium were lit by electric power. The opening festive performance took place on 8th August 1868.

In 1905 the theatre was rebuilt due to the new safety rules that had been introduced and was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style. The building was extended, making it taller and wider with more modern equipment also being installed. The total seating capacity was 353. The size of the stage was 11m wide, 9m deep and 12m high.

The next large reconstruction of the theatre took place between 1967 and 1977.

During the years 2007 and 2008 this now protected building undertook a general renovation with the technical equipment being modernized, the interior restored, a new auditorium installed, wheelchair access created and seats for the disabled added. The capacity of the auditorium is now 326. On 12th May 2008 the theatre again experienced a festive reopening.

This theatre has never had its own permanent professional ensemble of actors. It always did and still does today, rely on performers from other theatres and nations for its music and other productions. Today, the theatre has a yearly program that includes music of all genres, many different concerts such as the annual Chopin Festival (that celebrated 50 years this year) and numerous performances for children.

More information, including the program, can be found on the website of the operator (KIS Mariánské Lázné s.r.o): https://www.kisml.cz/en/
